Papeete was filled with young girls from the outer islands who came to party with boyfriends in the local bars and dance halls. The cafes and dance halls were famous throughout the South Pacific. The biggest, Quinn’s, was filled every night with locals and seaman from the cargo and passenger ships that stopped in Papeete and it stayed well past midnight. “Quinn’s Girls” performed traditional dances on a stage high above the crowd. The family lived in Tahiti and the neighboring islands for over a year.

Our Reservationists can book up to 18 months in advance for both Lunch & Dinner. Steps away from our restaurant and the beach, the Inn at Mama's is where coziness and elegance meet. Mama’s Fish House is the product of a grand sailing adventure.
The meal: appetizers and entrees

I was impressed to learn that mama's serves fresh fish caught by local fisherman. Truly, the seafood was evidently fresh, spectacularly prepared, and beautifully flavored. We ordered the antarctic toothfish caught 6,000 feet deep under glacier, as well as the kona kanpachi stuffed with lobster, crab, baked in a macadamia nut crust. My toothfish was steamed with hana ginger and SO buttery it practically melted in my mouth. It came with a side of coconut rice, which was delicious as well. I'd never had anything like it before, and loved that it was topped with chopped whole macadamia nuts and had the best crunch.

They would sail to the bays and lagoons of Moorea, Raiatea and Bora-bora, but mostly they remained tied to the quay that fronts Papeete. 25 or 30 yachts from all over the world were always tied up beside them and everyone lived on their boats. They lived aboard for over a year, practicing navigation and sailing to the islands off Southern California.

Look for the distinctive aerial tree roots of the Hala Tree as you make your way to the second check-in area. I won’t deny that Mama’s attracts a TON of tourists, but I personally know local Maui residents who enjoy a night out at Mama’s, too. They opened their doors in 1973, and they’re as popular today as ever. If they’ve been around this long, they must be doing something right. In Rarotonga Floyd worked for four months as the Captain/navigator of a 95 ft. cargo ship.

He could rest motionless at depths of 30 feet, waiting for the right fish to come to him. Sometimes he was able to snatch sweet mantis shrimp from their holes in the lagoon floor. As evening approached young Marquesians performed traditional erotic dances to the music of guitars, ukuleles and multiple drummers. The rhythm of the drums and the fast Tahitian guitar strum was infectious.

Starting with the grilled hee (octopus) was a great choice, as each bite has a bountiful amount of flavor without being too filling, the perfect combination for a pupu (appetizer). The grilled texture of the octopus gives each piece a chewy toughness, while the meaty innards are seasoned well with salt and vinegar. The addition of pickled daikon and sliced avocado set beneath the hee adds a creamy mix to the crunchy app.

They had plenty of water and baby food but by the last week they were down to pancakes and the occasional flying fish that flew onto the boat. Doris’ galley stove was out of gas and she had to cook on a single burner alcohol stove which she cradled between her legs. Their first stop was Rarotonga Island, 750 miles Southwest.
The store’s 46-acre farm supplies a cornucopia of tropical fruits and vegetables; its shelves teem with jars of pickled, powdered, and freeze-dried treats and tonics. My meal is over and I’m feeling more stuffed than the kanpachi I’d just eaten. Waiting for my check, once again I gaze out toward the restaurant’s up-close and personal ocean view, and I realize why Mama’s Fish House is so highly regarded. From the food to the service to the very view I’m looking at now, every aspect of my meal couldn’t have been better.
We are in Hawai'i where attire is more casual, but we are a fine dining restaurant and request that men do not wear tank tops, and ladies do not wear visible swimwear. All requests will have to be made through our website or over the phone. When booking on our website you now have the capability to submit a request if the date/time you are searching for is not available.
Many became loyal Mama’s customers once they learned how good fresh fish can be when properly prepared. Mama’s Fish House became a popular neighborhood restaurant, known for good fresh fish. Customers chose what fish they wanted and then chose any one of six ways to cook it. The restaurant soon had a small group of loyal local customers, but few tourists ever stopped on the north shore.
The Cook Islands were then owned by New Zealand and the food there was a mix of British and Polynesian. Avarua, Rarotonga was a comfortably small island town and the harbor was good. Floyd & Doris made many friends and hoped to return to spend more time there. Vaima served traditional Tahitian dishes and French bistro fare, accompanied by French wine or Papeete’s Hinano beer. Lunch might be a salad of fish marinated in coconut milk and lime juice and served in a coconut. (Tahitian fish salad and Hinano beer are served at Mama’s Fish House).
As Marinero approached the equator and the windless doldrums, it became unbearably hot and steamy. At night the entire boat would be lit by explosions of phosphorescent light from deep in the ocean. Vague outlines of huge animals could be seen in the deep. We highly recommend booking early as you plan for your special day. Come taste our interpretation of the Pacific ocean and the Pacific islands. Mama’s Fish House is open for open air dining and the safety and well-being of our staff, our guests, and each and every member of our Maui community, is of the utmost importance to us.
This mom-and-pop grocery offers the island’s best poke — raw fish mixed with traditional seasonings such as ground kukui nuts and seaweed (from $18 a pound). Add two scoops of rice and crunchy fern salad for a truly local meal. If you prefer a cooked lunch, visit Tails Up Maui for a classy fish sandwich ($19) or mochiko (rice flour) fried chicken ($17).
